Hanoi – Ha Giang
An early start is needed in the morning to avoid the traffic in Hanoi. A private vehicle will transport you to Ha Giang Province and your accommodation for the evening. The transfer is around 300km and will take approx 6 hours with a lunch stop en route.
Ha Giang is a very unique place in Northern Vietnam, less frequented by tourists and almost 90% of the population are ethnic minorities with specific cultures and lifestyles.
Ha Giang – Tam Son – 50km ride
After much of yesterday in a vehicle, it’s time for you to hop on to the saddle and explore the region of Ha Giang. Ride along Lo River until you reach the first ascent of the day. The highest pass today is Heaven’s Gate which is approximately 1,010m high. After that, we have a short downhill to Tam Son, a little tranquil village with traditional style houses nestled in the side of the hill.
Tam Son – Meo Vac – 80km ride
After a hearty breakfast, keep riding downhill until you reach the bottom of the valley where you start the ride through hill tribe villages dotted along the way. You might be lucky enough to catch a colourful local market at one of the villages.
After lunch, be ready for a big climb to get to Ha Giang Rock Plateau which offers nothing but rocks, authenticity, beautiful mountain ranges, nature, and no tourist crowds. Take your time to enjoy these simply amazing scenes. A hot dinner awaits you once you finally descend into Meo Vac.
Meo Vac – Dong Van – Meo Vac – 40km ride
There’re some uphill riding today, but the reward is outstanding once you get over the hills. The 10km Mã Pí Lèng Pass that leads to Dong Van is considered the most scenic road of northern Vietnam. Dong Van Karst Global Geopark was designated by UNESCO as one of 77 sites with the important geological and cultural heritage. It also homes to 17 ethnic minority groups which create a unique and rich cultural heritage of the area.
Have a lunch break at Dong Van Market before going to the former Hmong King’s Palace. The Vuong Family was considered the King of Hmong People in Dong Van, Ha Giang. Their residence was built in the scenic valley of Sa Phin with Chinese architecture. The whole house was built out of rock and wood only. From here, transfer back to Meo Vac.
Meo Vac – Bao Lac – 70km ride
Enjoy a wonderful ride today as most of the time it is downhill. Ride for about 30km on a nice smooth road. You then have some up and downs through peaceful villages until you make it to Bao Lac in the afternoon.
Bao Lac – Ba Be Lake 70km ride
No more challenging climbs today, as the route is mainly downhill. Next destination is Ba Be, literally means 3 lakes. Ba Be is the largest natural lake in Vietnam, located in Ba Be National Park. The lake has a lot to offer, including waterfalls, rivers, valleys, caves, vast variety of flora and fauna, and surrounded by limestone mountain ranges. You will have time to take a refreshing dip in the lake and enjoy a cold drink as the sun descends.
