The toughest climb in Wales?

Tucked into the rugged beauty of North Wales, the route from Abergwyngregyn to Foel Fras could be one of the toughest cycling ascents in the UK.

11.45km with a 991m elevation gain at an average grade of 8.1% and 70% off road makes this a challenge only for those with big lungs and a propensity to suffer!

Starting Point: Abergwyngregyn – Gateway to the Carneddau

The ride begins at Morfa Aber nature reserve carpark, where there is limited free parking. You’ll soon be riding through the small village of Abergwyngregyn home to 3 cafes if you want to grab refreshments before hitting the mountains (there is nothing after this).

After around 1km you’ll pass through the parking area for the famous Rhaeadr Fawr (Aber Falls) one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Wales. It’s 2km from the carpark to the base of the falls, but you aren’t allowed to cycle within the nature reserve so if you want to view it you’ll need to lock your bike up and walk along the flat graded track.

Continuing on the climb, a narrow tarmac road increases in gradient for another 2km until you reach the small car park for Llyn Anafon.

The Climb Begins: Into the Carneddau

As the gradient kicks in, the route turns into a gravel and mountain trail, making a gravel or mountain bike the ideal companion. The road narrows into a track, and before long you’re navigating rocky paths, stream crossings, and wide, open expanses.

8km of pure off road trails

This isn’t a casual Sunday spin — it’s a ride that tests your legs and rewards your soul.

  • Distance: ~ 11.45km (one way)

  • Elevation gain: 991m

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (gravel/off-road capable bike essential)

  • Best time to ride: Late spring to early autumn (weather permitting)

 Peak Glory: Reaching Foel Fras

After 9.34km you will reach the summit of Drum (pronounced Drim) at 771m above sea level. This is where the hard packed rocky trail ends and a grassier, boggier trail starts. If you’re looking for a 100% (depending on fitness) ride-able experience then this is the place to finish as there will be sections of hike a bike in the final 2km up to Foel Fras (pronounced Voil Vras) .

But if you want the full off road experience then from the Drum the goal is insight!

Foel Fras stands at 944 meters, is the 11th highest peak in Wales and a Welsh 3000er.

The reward? Panoramic views of Snowdonia, the Menai Strait, and even across to the Isle of Anglesey on a clear day. You’re standing atop one of Wales’ most majestic peaks — with the thrill of knowing you got there under your own power.

 Tips for the Trail

  • Bring layers – weather changes fast at elevation.

  • Navigation matters – although the track is fairly distinct  cloud cover can make navigating difficult. GPS or OS Maps are a must.

  • Respect the landscape – this is wild pristine terrain; leave no trace.

  • Tyre choice matters – wide, grippy tyres will save your ride.

 The Descent: Adrenaline & Safety

From the summit you can obviously return the way you came or drop down the other side, and there are numerous routes you could take to get you back to the start point.

Whichever option you take be sure to ride safely. This is a very remote area with lots of hidden obstacles on a fast descent. The only option in the event of an accident would be the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue and possibly helicopter evacuation!!

This is cycling in its rawest form — part ride, part pilgrimage.
